Peter Baggetta - Head Coach

 Peter has been coaching rugby for 18 years and has been the head coach at Gonzaga since 2009.  During his eight + years, Gonzaga has won the 2014, 2015, and 2016 National Championship - the first school to win three straight National Championships, as well as making five finals and eight straight semi-final appearances in the National Championship.  Peter has worked with teams at all levels both in the United States and around the world. He was the assistant coach for the US Women’s National team at the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup and was the former National Team Coach and Rugby Development Officer for Guam where he was instrumental in creating the national team program and establishing rugby as a varsity interscholastic sport for Guam middle and high schools. Peter also worked as the defense specialist coach for USA Rugby from 2008 to 2010, and as an IRB coach educator for the USA Rugby Coach Development Program from 2007 to 2011. In 2009 Peter was the Assistant Director of Rugby at Penn State University.  Peter is currently the Academic Support Specialist at Gonzaga and also teachers AP Psychology and European History, and is finishing his PhD at the University of Maryland in educational neuroscience.

  

 
Grant Furnary (Class of 2006)

Grant is a 2006 graduate of Gonzaga and was a 4-year varsity player for the Eagles. After leaving Gonzaga he played flyhalf for Virginia Tech, captaining the team for the his final two years in Blacksburg. Grant returned to Eye St. following graduation and currently works as the Registrar and teaches Personal Financial Management at Gonzaga. He has coached in various capacities within the program since the 2011 season, and has coached with Varsity Purple since the 2014 season helping the team to win three straight National Championships.
 

 

Pat Murphy 
- Assistant Coach - Forwards

 Pat is in his 7th year coaching rugby at Gonzaga.  He started his rugby career in 1980 as a flanker at Walt Whitman High School (which subsequently became the Maryland Exiles), and captained the 1982 East Coast Championships finalist squad.  At Catholic University he was a 4 year captain for the Cardinals playing both back row and scrum half against perennial powers that included Maryland, Penn State and the U.S. Naval Academy.  After graduating from Catholic Pat became a Marine Corps Officer and played rugby at both Camp Lejeune and New River, NC.  After several years of club rugby while attending law school, Pat was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California where he continued to play until he left active service and entered private practice back in Washington D.C.  Pat returned to rugby to coach at Gonzaga in 2011 when his son Jon began playing as a freshman.  He has coached the Gonzaga Freshman (2011), JV (2012 and ’13), the Head Coach of Varsity Black (2014 and ’15), and assistant coach of Varsity Black (2016).  Pat’s son Jon (’14) played flanker all four years at Gonzaga, including the last two on the Eagles’ Varsity Purple team, as well as being on the Leadership Team of the 2014 National Championship squad.  Pat is the Global General Litigation and Investigations Counsel for GE Healthcare, a $19 billion dollar platform of General Electric.

 
 

 Gabe Free (Class of 2010)

Gabe was a member of the class of 2010 which was the first Gonzaga Rugby team to reach the national championship game. Gabe was captain of both the rugby and football teams while at Gonzaga and then went on to play at Penn State in both 15's and 7's, as well as for the USA U-17's, and was a U-20 All American reserve. He studied Exercise Science at PSU, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and personal trainer at Balance Gym here in Washington DC
