GONZAGA BASEBALL PROGRAM FAQs

When do tryouts take place?

Tryouts usually take place on February 20th and last 3-4 days, with final rosters being set the morning after the final day of tryouts. Practices begin immediately after tryouts are completed. The Varsity Coach schedules a meeting in early February with all interested students and goes over the entire tryout schedule once it is finalized and approved.

Are there additional fees once my son makes the baseball team?

Yes.  Gonzaga has a budget for the baseball program which is used for equipment, uniforms, buses, umpires, etc. However, the budget does not include Booster Club fees.  These fees are collected once the teams are finalized and may vary depending on team (JV White, JV Purple, and Varsity). These dues go towards team dinners, facilities, spirit wear and other miscellaneous items to support the program.

What is the Gonzaga Booster Club?

The Booster Club is an important component of the Gonzaga Baseball program.  A team parent heads up the Booster Club and along with the other parents organizes various events during the school year to support and improve the baseball program.  The club provides additional financial support for the program, organizes team social activities, and assists in communication.  Fees collected fund team building events such as, but not limited to, barbeques, senior day and the annual baseball banquet. Funds are also used to purchase additional equipment and spirit wear for the program and ensure The Nats Academy is properly maintained.

Will my child be allowed to play other sports at Gonzaga?

Yes, we do not have any limitations on what sports the boys play, as long as it is not another spring sport.

What kind of commitment should my child be prepared for if he makes the team and what do the off season workouts entail?

Even though our spring season runs from about the end of February through the beginning of May(or end of May for Varsity players), most players train all year round. Players participate in camps, fall and summer teams and players participate in the weight training/conditioning programs offered at the school. These activities are not mandatory, but strongly recommended for those athletes that are not playing another sport during a particular season. In order to keep up with our competitors, players typically have to do more on their own than just show up on February 20th for tryouts. Our off season workouts start in June and run all the way until the first day of tryouts in February. We take off holidays and some time in August. Again, if you play another sport at Gonzaga, then you are not permitted to attend these workouts during that sport's season.

What is the policy on Spring Break for baseball players?

Coach Bradley gives all players the three days between Good Friday through Easter Sunday off. All other days during the spring break, players are required to be at all team activities.

What is the difference between the Summer, Fall and Spring teams?

Summer and fall teams are designed for student-athletes that wish to play baseball year round. Many of our Gonzaga players play for a variety of travel baseball programs in the area. Coach Bradley encourages his Gonzaga players to play for the travel program of their choice as long as it is a quality program. During the Spring, tryouts are held around the end of February and this is done on a competitive basis and is officially sanctioned by the school.

When and where does the team practice and play games in the Spring?

All teams practice(and play home games) at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in SE. It is an 18 million dollar state of the art complex with three synthetic turf fields and an indoor facility.  The JV White and JV Purple teams takes a bus to the complex and the Varsity players usually drive themselves to practice and games.  The teams practice or play games everyday during the season, with the exception of most Sundays. Mon-Fri players will practice from 3-6pm and Saturdays the practice times vary. Game times will vary throughout the season. Players should be prepared to adjust their schedule on bad weather days. All sports compete for gym time on campus. When a decision is made to change plans due to bad weather or field conditions, an announcement will be posted on the website.
